Character limits for social media and SEO

Character count matters when you are writing tweets, Instagram bios, TikTok bios, SMS messages, email subject lines, meta titles and meta descriptions. Shorter text is easier to scan, avoids truncation and keeps the most important words visible on mobile screens.

Why emojis can change SMS length

Plain SMS messages usually allow 160 characters. Once a message contains emoji or certain Unicode symbols, the message may use Unicode encoding and fit fewer characters per segment. This is why a short message with emojis can turn into multiple SMS segments.
